The "Mother of the blues" had been singing that style for 20 years before she made her recording debut in 1923. With a voice capable of heavy, tough delivery she excelled at it and helped create the blueprint for others to follow, with tunes like "Bo Weavil Blues", and "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom".
