Pianist Herbie Nichols was one of the great lost figures of American
post-war jazz, as he died young in 1963, having recorded a few
albums for Blue Note and Savoy. His sublime playing combined
modal and bop influences with classical and 'ethnic' sounds. He was
utterly unique and his records remain very hard to find. This set
from 1975 is an excellent place to get familiar. Recommended!
