Danny Ray, aka Big Black, was a percussionist in the south
before moving to New York and playing with Dizzy Gillespie,
Freddie Hubbard and others, becoming known as "the king
of the congas". He used his inate knowledge of groovy
rhythms to create a number of soulful, funky albums in
the late 60s and early 70s, with this 1968 monster being
one of his best.
